3: The DJI brand is synonymous with high quality, top spec drones that are often priced at somewhat higher levels than many other popular brands - but they're worth every penny! For this reason it's unsurprising that the DJI Phantom 3 Standard is the top-value quadcopter on our list. It comes equipped with a 4K camera, excellent battery life and smart mode which allows you to fly without having to control it directly - ideal for beginners.

DJI Phantom 3 Standard - Review by ILya Koshkin

A well-balanced, high-performance drone with a 4K video camera mounted on it. This best all-rounder quadcopter delivers excellent flight stability and reliability for its class and comes with a few bells and whistles such as GPS and GLONASS (the Russian equivalent of GPS) for better positioning, Return Home function and Vision Positioning System.

At first glance, the DJI Phantom 3 Standard quadcopter doesn't look all that different from its predecessor – the well-received DJI Phantom 2 Vision . In fact, it's a dead ringer in appearance. It still has that sleek white plastic body with the cross shape at the front and the same four stubby legs underneath.

However, DJI have made a number of improvements under the hood for this latest addition to their Phantom series. The drone's core electronics now reside inside a much larger circuit board, and there's a new mobile app, which you can use to control it wirelessly. The controller is also much improved; in addition to the joystick and power switch on the top right (which has been moved next to the USB socket), there are two buttons: Home and landing mode.

The Phantom 3 Standard comes packed in a sturdy box. Most of the space is occupied by a very rigid foam case, which houses the quadcopter itself along with an external battery charger, two sets of extra props, mobile device mount and four pairs of very useful ND filters (more on them later). Unfortunately, unlike its older brother – the Phantom 2 Vision+ - it doesn't come with a protective carrying case for the controller.

DJI have upgraded the battery to a 5,200mAh unit in this model, which is a lot bigger than its predecessor's and should give you up to 25 minutes of flying time. The integrated charger takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to fully charge the battery from flat.
